Event Title: Using the Bar Model to Support Primary Maths
Facilitator: Vivien Townsend
Bar modelling is a way of representing mathematics and can support learners of all ages to ‘see’ what needs to be done to solve a problem. During this half-day course Viv will introduce the principles of bar modelling including progression from a concrete to a pictorial approach. We will look at how to model addition and subtraction problems, and at how to model problems involving multiplication, division and fractions.
Viv will also share an alternative to RUCSAC for approaching word problems which includes the requirement to ‘represent’ the problem, bringing bar modelling to the fore. Throughout the session, teachers will be invited to use these new approaches and consider how they can be adapted for their own setting.
BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL
