A ‘Fizzy’ Day of Learning & Teaching in the Early Years led by Nina Jackson
In a world of ever changing educational policies and practices, it is the unique world of the child, growing, learning and experiencing the world with different learning experiences which counts. Data, tests and exams does not a great learner make.
For me, ‘Of Teaching, Learning & Sherbet Lemons’ is what education, schools, teaching and learning is all about. We need the solid exterior – the rigour, the rules, the systems and the structures – to make everything work. Getting through the hard shell makes going in search of the fizzy centre that much more satisfying, and it is here, at the core of teaching and learning, where the most magical things take place, where the real fizz happens. This is the part that really makes everything worthwhile – the chemical reaction that produces outstanding, innovative and motivational teaching and learning for everyone in our classrooms, not just the few. And fizzy teaching and learning is great. It’s exciting, it wakes you up and, boy, does it give you some zing.

Education is a world of very special people but you will meet few as special as Nina Jackson. With a background in special needs education and many years’ experience in schools focusing on music, the Arts and teaching and learning in all its guises, Nina has a breath-taking grasp of what makes classrooms, children – and their teachers – tick.
Since leaving full-time teaching Nina has worked across the UK and as far afield as Ghana, Chile and the Middle East covering school improvement areas including teaching and learning, motivation, special needs (or ‘learning differences’ as she calls it), learning technologies, emotional well-being and mental health for both children and adults. Nina has written and co-authored a number of books and publications and her latest book, ‘Of Teaching, Learning and Sherbet Lemons: A Compendium of Careful Advice for Teachers’, looks at how to put the fizz back into classrooms.
