Developing Pupils’ Understanding of Essential Maths – moving from superficial to secure understanding led by Vivien Townsend
Evidence from 2010 shows that children who only just achieved national expectations at the end of KS1 went on to struggle to make expected progress during KS2. These children appeared to be stuck at level 2C for some time (in the old language of levels) because their understanding of KS1 content was only superficial. The National Strategies identified the particularly problematic aspects of mathematics as being:
Although the curriculum has changed, these aspects of mathematics continue to be problematic for many learners.
This whole day course for Teaching Assistants will focus on how these aspects of mathematics can be taught so that understanding becomes secure. The course is therefore appropriate for KS1 TAs who are supporting pupils to meet national expectations, and is also appropriate for those Teaching Assistants who are supporting lower attainers in KS2 who may be struggling because of gaps in their learning relating to the course content.

Vivien Townsend is a provider of mathematics professional development. She has worked with many schools, subject leaders, teachers and teaching assistants across the Midlands (and beyond), always instilling an enthusiasm for the subject and sharing lots of practical and transferable ideas.
Vivien is an NCETM Professional Development Accredited Lead and is a member of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematical Association and the National Association of Mathematics Advisers.
In a previous life, Vivien was a primary school teacher and then worked for Warwickshire LA’s Educational Development Service, inspiring schools with active, fun, cross-curricular and creative approaches to teaching mathematics.

There is one place available per subscription. Additional places may be booked at a cost of £80 per person. Non-subscribing schools may attend, subject to availability, at a cost of £100 per person. Invoices to be paid prior to the event.
