Artificial Intelligence is quietly transforming the UK’s classrooms, making lessons more personalised, interactive and efficient. From apps that adapt to each child’s learning pace, to tools that reduce teachers’ admin workload, AI is helping schools focus on what matters most – nurturing curiosity, creativity and confidence. The tips identified below are an extract of the content from an Expert Session on AI, led by Rose Luckin who is an internationally respected academic and influential communicator across multiple stakeholders about the future of education and technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The full recorded session also covers:
- Implementation strategies for schools
- The development of an AI policy including a free AI policy template
- Adopting purpose driven approaches to AI integration including a free strategic planning templat
Tip 1: Learn Fast and Be Strategic
- Consider your school’s parameters for AI use
- Decide where AI will be applied (e.g. reading support, parent communication)
- Consider if your school can support the required tools
- Decide what training your teachers need
4D AI Strategy Framework, EVR, 2024
Tip 2: Develop an AI Policy Collaboratively
Every school needs an AI policy in order to:
- Protect student safety and data
- Support teaching and learning effectively
- Meet safeguarding responsibilities
Ofsted’s key message is: “Leaders are responsible for ensuring that the use of AI does not have a detrimental effect on outcomes, quality of provision or decisions” – Ofsted ’24
Tip 3: Adopt a Purpose-Driven Approach
Decide what you want to achieve with your AI, for example:
- Workload Reduction
- Resource Generation
- Assessment
- Supporting SEND
- Personalised Learning
- Parent Communication
- Professional Development
Tip 4: Identify Your Theory of Change
Decide on the change you want to achieve – what will be the AI outcome?
Example:
- Theory of Change: Reading skills will improve through daily practice with an AI companion that provides patient, personalised feedback and encouragement
Tip 5: Build Logic and Check Assumptions
What steps do you ned to take in order to achieve the outcome?
- Resources- what resources need to be provided?
- Activities- how will staff and students engage with AI?
- Outputs- what should happen if activities work?
- Outcomes- what changes do you expect in students and staff?
- Impact- what broader changes might occur in your school community?
