Inclusion Bases: Principles and Practicalities for Mainstream Schools

Led by Kate Browning

Overview

This course explores how mainstream primary schools can respond effectively to the growing complexity of need, in line with the national direction of travel towards inclusive practice.

Grounded in key principles such as belonging, high expectations and the right to mainstream education, the session will support leaders to critically evaluate and design Inclusion Bases and specialist internal provision that enhance, rather than replace, high-quality mainstream teaching.

Participants will:

    • Develop a clear understanding of different models of provision (including Inclusion Bases and specialist internal provision) and their purpose
    • Explore the risks and unintended consequences of additional provision
    • Use a first principles approach to ensure provision is rooted in equity, inclusion and long-term outcomes
    • Consider the ‘pushes and pulls’ affecting pupil access to mainstream learning
    • Gain practical guidance on key areas including:
      • Purpose and intended outcomes
      • Leadership, culture and whole-school responsibility
      • Curriculum design and adaptive teaching
      • Staffing, roles and expertise
      • Assessment, tracking and quality assurance
      • Reintegration and transitions
      • Working with families and specialist partners
    • Reflect on sustainability, funding and scalability in the current system context

The course will also include input from experienced SENCOs and school leaders who have developed provision within their own settings, sharing honest insights into both the benefits and the challenges.

Participants will leave with greater clarity, practical tools, and strategic direction to develop or refine provision that supports pupils with SEND to thrive in mainstream.
