EVENT TITLE:

Building Mathematical Resilience led by the Central Maths Hub

Following on from the success of the additional CPD sessions we have hosted for primary teachers and Maths subject leaders we have organised two further sessions for 2018-19.

DATE: Thursday 23rd May 2019

TIME: 09:30-12:00

VENUE: Henley Golf Club, Henley in Arden

EVENT OVERVIEW:

The construct ‘mathematical resilience’ allows learners to manage and protect themselves from unhelpful emotions, such as mathematics anxiety, that may arise when mathematics becomes difficult to learn, and to recruit appropriate support. Mathematical resilience is not just something that learners do or do not have, it can be grown. We will explore the Growth Zone Model as a means to help learners understand and articulate their feelings when they are learning mathematics. We will also explore how teaching for mathematical resilience enables learners to become convinced that they can do mathematics.

Teaching for resilience involves learners developing:

    • A growth mindset
    • A willingness to struggle
    • A knowledge of how to work at mathematics
    • An understanding of the meaning, value and purpose there is in maths

These discrete CPD sessions take place during the morning on the same day as our Maths Subject Leader Meetings and are open to all schools. Please note, lunch will be provided for delegates who are staying for the full day.

EVENT FACILITATOR:

Our two facilitators are Guy and Nikki, both of whom lead Maths in their own schools and link closely with the Central Maths Hub.
Guy Carpenter is Lead Practitioner for Mathematics at Hillcrest High School, Dudley. Guy is also a Professional Development Lead for NCETM and is co-leading the Central Maths Hub – Mathematical Resilience work group with Nikki Powell, Assistant Head Teacher at Gig Mill Primary School, Dudley and also NCETM Professional Development Lead.

COST:

£40 per delegate for schools that subscribe to the Maths Subject Leader Core Offer OR £80 per delegate for non-subscribing schools.

These discrete CPD sessions take place during the morning on the same day as our Maths Subject Leader Meetings and are open to all schools. Please note, lunch will be provided for delegates who are staying for the full day.
