Maths Through Stories led by Dr. Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai

In this hands-on session, participants will explore a range of story picture books that can be used to enrich EYFS, KS1 and KS2 mathematics teaching and learning. The participants will also consider which selection criteria should be taken into account when selecting suitable mathematical story picture books. The participants will then learn about a pilot research project in which I set out to explore gender representation in mathematical story picture books and how they need to be mindful of diversity when selecting which books they want to use in their teaching.
The bulk of the session will then be spent on having the participants working in small groups to design a mathematics teaching and learning activity based on a story picture book of their choice. Finally, the participants will be shown how they can continue to receive support through the MathsThroughStories.org website as well as how they can be part of the initiative (e.g. contributing to lesson ideas). This workshop will be useful for both participants who are new to the idea of using story picture books in mathematics teaching and those who have had some experience of using the resource.
Dr. Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai is interested in research that centres around the use of creative stories to help enhance mathematics and statistics teaching and learning for young children and adult learners respectively. Currently, he leads the ‘Maths Through Stories’ project (www.mathsthroughstories.org), an international research consortium of over 50 colleagues across 40 countries around the world which sets out to investigate various aspects of the integration of creative stories in mathematics and statistics education.
In addition to his lectureship in Primary Mathematics Education at the University of Reading, Dr. Trakulphadetkrai also works with a number of national mathematics education organisations, including the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and the Mathematical Association (MA).
