Assistant SENCo Course

Overview

The role of SENCo is a huge undertaking and many schools are opting to appoint an Assistant SENCo to support the operational management of the role.

This 2-day course is designed to provide Assistant SENCos with both the professional knowledge and understanding and the practical skills to be able to support the school’s SENCo with the day-to-day operational elements of SEN Coordination.

Areas the course will cover:

  • Overview of the core SEND Code of Practice and The Equality Act: a school’s statutory duties
  • Putting the Assess, Plan, Do, Review phases of the Graduated Approach into practice for those at SEN Support or with an EHCP
  • The EHCP process and Annual Reviews
  • Liaising with Specialist Support
  • Safeguarding students with SEND
  • Identification of SEND
  • Supporting Record Keeping
  • Supporting inclusive high-quality teaching: advising teachers and support staff Managing interventions
  • Working with Support Staff – best practice
  • Person-centerd approaches to working with parents, carers and students

Who should attend?

Aspiring SENCos, support staff – Teaching Assistants and/ or HLTAs, any colleague who would like to learn more about supporting the day-to-day operational elements of the SENCo role. This course is suitable to both primary and secondary colleagues.

Kate Browning

Kate is our SENCo Network Leader and she is a well-regarded lead professional both locally and nationally in school improvement for children and young people with SEND. She has over 20 years of experience as a teacher, SENCo, Local Authority School Improvement Officer for SEN and interim Education Development Officer for NASEN, where she supported the delivery of nationwide training on the SEND Code of Practice with the DfE.
