Curriculum CPD – Geography
Adaptive approaches to primary geography
Led by Jon Cannell
Overview
The day will explore how to engage and enable all pupils to build the necessary components of geographical knowledge and skills, as well as ways of thinking and working to ensure a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We will explore how to utilise the practical and ‘real world’ nature of geography to support adaptive teaching approaches, focusing on three of the subject’s signature pedagogies: fieldwork, mapping and enquiry.
Enquiry based learning is a cornerstone of geographical thinking and we will consider how to effectively investigate places, environments and geographical issues. Delegates will develop an understanding of how to structure and support pupils to carry out a geographical enquiry. A process that might equally be applied to investigating litter, traffic and flooding at a local level, through to the interpretation of maps and expert studies to better understand the causes and effects of, for example, climate change at a global scale.
