Curriculum CPD – Science

Delving Deeper into Primary Science

Led by Eleanor Atkinson

Overview

These online sessions led by Eleanor Atkinson, our inspiring Science lead, are tailored to enhance your role as a Primary Science subject leader.

Session 1: Embedding enquiry in the science curriculum

All pupils should have the opportunity to ask their own questions and carry out a range of enquiries that develop their enquiry skills. But how do we plan and assess this whilst ensuring that our pupils build a strong knowledge base. During this session we will consider planning for progression from EYFS to Y6; consider how, when and what to assess in science and explore a range of free and readily available resources to support this.

Outcomes

  • To know how to plan for progression in both substantive and disciplinary knowledge
  • To identify and plan for assessment opportunities
  • To identify effective ways to monitor science across the school

Session 2: Recording for assessment in Primary Science

Assessment is at the heart of teaching and learning. It allows teachers to make informed decisions about the needs of our learners in order to make further progress.

This CPD examines the two main types of assessment: formative and summative. We will also examine a range of strategies for recording science learning that can be used when assessing children’s attainment in science.

A variety of resources, ideas and activities will be shared to show that assessment of progress is all part of teaching and learning in science and that the recording of science can be done more creatively.

Outcomes:

  • Raised awareness of a range of assessment tools
  • To share ideas on tracking progress in science
  • How to assess and record Working Scientifically
  • The importance of quality questioning and effective feedback

This course is being run over 2 sessions. Delegates are expected to ATTEND BOTH SESSIONS.

The sessions are taking place as follows:

SESSION 1: Thursday, 23 January 2025 (09:30-12:00)

SESSION 2: Thursday, 13 March 2025 (09:30-12:00)
