Decoding Behaviour: Understanding, Addressing & Fostering Positive Responses to Supporting Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) led by Kay Hamilton & Kate Browning
This session is brought to you by Gateway Alliance, working in partnership with the East Midlands Academy Trust.
Overview:
Are you eager to gain a deeper understanding of challenging behaviour and enhance your knowledge of social, emotional, and mental health?
In this session, we will clarify the intricate connections between emotions and relationships, highlighting how our emotional experiences shape interactions with others. Through practical techniques, we’ll equip SENDCo’s and pastoral leads with the skills to spot non-problem-solving behaviour effectively, addressing underlying issues or unmet needs. Additionally, we’ll offer insights into the neuroscience behind behaviour.
Furthermore, we’ll practice a relational approach to meeting children where they and develop our skills in this area. We will explore keyways to support children, providing practical strategies and top tips for promoting resilience-building behaviours and attitudes.
Throughout the session, there will be opportunities for group discussion and questions to enhance understanding and application of the material presented.
In our final session we will take a strategic view by examining the graduated approach, identifying strengths, addressing gaps, and maximizing opportunities for positive outcomes.

Kay Hamilton is Programme Manager at Gateway Alliance. Prior to this Kay supported and advised schools nationally and internationally as a childhood and adolescent trainer in trauma informed approaches to mental health and wellbeing. Kay has 24 years’ experience in education, as a SENCo, specialist behaviour teacher for the LA, Science Subject Lead, Deputy Head and Headteacher. She has supported schools as a Consultant for SEMH, is a Mental Health First Aider, Designated Safeguarding Lead and long-standing Governor of a Primary PRU.
Kate Browning is the Gateway Alliance SENCo Network Leader and is a well-regarded lead professional both locally and nationally in school improvement for children and young people with SEND. She has over 20 years of experience as a teacher, SENCo, Local Authority School Improvement Officer for SEN and interim Education Development Officer for NASEN, where she supported the delivery of nationwide training on the SEND Code of Practice with the DfE.
Kate now works with Teaching Schools, MATs, Local Authorities and individual schools to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND across the primary and secondary phase. She teaches the National Award for SEN Coordination and facilitates a number of SENCo Networks across the midlands. She is a lecturer for the University of Warwick PGCE programme and has delivered key note speeches and seminars at many conferences and events both nationally and internationally. She is an Associate Consultant for NASEN, an expert advisor for The Key and Chair of Governors of a large junior school.
