Senior Leaders’ Webinar 1: Re-Imagining the Purpose of Education: Lessons from Lockdown led by Rob Carpenter

The first in our series of inspirational senior leader webinars will be led by Rob Carpenter, Trust Leader for the Inspire Partnership. The session will cover a variety of themes designed to support school leaders in planning priorities as we question what lessons we have learnt from lockdown and the purpose of education.  We will introduce the possibility that instead of education being slave to desired outcomes, (what education should do), we should reposition education for what it actually is.  We will extend thinking around the social nature of learning and the need to ensure collaboration is placed more centrally within the learning journey.

During the session Rob will explore:

Re-framing the purpose of education:

  • Is education an end in itself or does it serve another purpose?
  • How do we evaluate what a ‘good’ education should be?
  • What is its core purpose?
  • How is our curriculum lived rather than intended?
  • Learning as a social exchange rather than a product.

The domains of learning:

  • What do we esteem as most important in relation to learning?
  • How do we measure learning?
  • What are our curriculum priorities for the coming year?

A curriculum for equity and excellence – the specifics:

  • What do we mean by Global Curriculum?
  • How is this different and why is it needed?
  • What are the key features?
  • How does this lead to deep learning?

Reflections and questions

  • How does this session apply to my context?
  • What curriculum stories do people tell in your own organisations?
  • Who are the curriculum heroes and villains in your own settings?
